Green Roof Systems

Green roofs are types of inverted or warm roof systems and comprise of components that work together to form high quality, holistic waterproofing applications for flat roof structures. IKO’s green roof systems are composed of roof components that are fully compatible and work seamlessly together. This makes the installation of a green roof system faster, improves its performance and extends its life.

The three main types of green roof systems are extensive, intensive, and biodiverse green roof systems that are also known as brown roofs.

Extensive green roof systems typically have shallow soil layers supporting moss, herbs and grasses where minimal maintenance is required. Intensive green roof systems are complete outdoor spaces on roofs with shrubs, trees and walkways. They come with all the maintenance usually associated with gardens and some may include extensive irrigation systems. Biodiverse roof systems are varied and balance both fauna and flora to replicate the ecological needs of the local area.

Designers and specifiers increasingly utilise green roof systems to create additional space for occupiers of new and existing buildings and to help address the eco balance of the area, especially in cities. Also called green, living, or eco-roofs, these are popular within urban environments. Green roof systems can be used not just by wildlife, but also have a wide range of recreational applications including running tracks, football pitches and roof gardens.

Benefits of green roof systems

  • Significant advantages for the environment with a reduced heat island effect and improved air quality through reduction of gas pollutants and dust particles
  • Stormwater attenuation and water retention reduces the risk of flooding
  • Noise reduction through improved acoustic performance
  • Heat insulation and protection from thermal gain reduces the cooling energy requirement and carbon emissions of a building
  • Extended lifespan of the roof membrane through protection from UV radiation and temperature extremes
  • Additional habitat for flora and fauna aids biodiversity in the area
  • Increased property value

Considerations for installation of green roof systems

  • Maintenance requirements should be considered
  • Irrigation and water storage
  • Regulatory requirements
  • Wind uplift and weight loading

IKO roof systems and products are manufactured in the UK from responsibly, and where possible, locally sourced materials in order to reduce our carbon footprint and help with the sustainability of your project. The majority of our roofing systems are also BBA certified.
