Home/Inverted roof systems

Inverted roof systems

Inverted roof systems are insulated roof structures with the waterproofing membrane placed under the insulation. This ‘upside-down’ sequence means the structural roof deck is waterproofed first, then insulated and finally finished with ballast such as gravel or paving slabs. The ballast protects the loose-laid insulation from wind uplift.

An inverted roof system doesn’t require an additional air and vapour control layer (AVCL), as the waterproofing membrane beneath the insulation layer performs this function.

The positioning of the waterproofing membrane means it is protected from the elements, UV radiation and rapid changes in temperature. The waterproofing membrane is also less exposed to mechanical damage that could be caused by footfall or plant movement. Inverted roofs are therefore often specified for roof spaces that require plant or material storage and movement. They are also well-suited to constructions where regular foot traffic or vehicular traffic is required.

What are the benefits of inverted roof systems?

  • The waterproofing membrane is protected from both elements and mechanical damage making inverted roof system durable and robust solutions
  • Systems can be used to create recreational areas such as green roofs, blue roofs, terraces, and parking decks.
  • The inverted roofing structure offers protection against extreme thermal changes during the winter and summer months, providing improved thermal stability to the system
  • A separate AVCL is not required

Considerations for installation of inverted roof systems

  • The insulation layer does not benefit from the protection of the waterproofing membrane and must be rot proof, durable and have low moisture absorption.
  • Provide roof falls using the guidance in BS 6229:2018 and calculate roof drainage provision in accordance with BS EN 12056-3:2000.
  • A high-quality waterproofing membrane is also important to protect the below construction
