Podium roofs
Podium roofs are types of inverted roofs used to create communal outdoor spaces in the form of roof platforms, predominantly serving as trafficked amenity spaces. These can be utilised as plazas and car parks or include landscaped recreational areas similar to green roofs. Podium roofs are typically specified for larger roof spaces of strong structures such as office blocks, retail and leisure centres and larger residential developments.
Waterproofing of podium roofs is critical and both cold and hot-applied roofing solutions for roof podium deck applications should ideally be monolithic and fully bonded to the structure to remain watertight through the general expansion and contraction of the building components.
Hard landscaping applications are available for podium roofs to allow for the required weight loading, including vehicular traffic and majority also allow for installation of concealed services. The options vary from bedded to free-draining paving systems. Soft landscaping options include gardens, lawns, turfs and rubber crumb.
To create an effective podium roof, the landscaping and waterproofing components need to work together and create a holistic system that can integrate seamlessly with the building.
