Warm Roof Systems
Warm roof systems for flat roofs are assemblies where the thermal insulation is installed on top of the roof structure. This keeps the structural decking, usually constructed from timber, steel or concrete, at the same temperature levels as the internal temperature of the building. There is no need for roof void ventilation and cold bridging through the system is reduced as the insulation is not interrupted by structural support. Warm roof systems can help reduce heat losses and improve the overall energy efficiency of a building.
An air and vapour control layer (AVCL) is required beneath the thermal insulation to restrict the passage of moisture vapour into the structure of the roof and limit the risk of condensation occurring within the roof structure. The finishing layer is a waterproof membrane; either bonded or mechanically fixed, over the insulation layer to offer protection from the elements.
The relatively simple installation makes warm roof systems a popular choice for new build and refurbishment in buildings that require increased insulation levels. The thermal benefits these systems can offer in the UK climate and the cost effectiveness of the solution is attractive for both refurbishment and new build.

- Provide roof falls using the guidance in BS 6229:2018 and calculate roof drainage provision in accordance with BS EN 12056-3:2000.
- The potential for increased height requires careful planning of insulation thicknesses, upstand heights and floor/door threshold levels
- Condensation risk analysis should be undertaken to assess the likelihood of interstitial condensation
