Adhered Flat Roof Systems
Adhered roofs refer to roof build-ups where the single ply waterproofing membrane is secured to the substrate using an adhesive. The substrate can be a concrete or timber roof deck, or thermal insulation boards. Adhered roof build-ups can be used on any flat roof type, whether a warm, inverted or cold roof, and can be part of a ballasted roofing system.
Adhered roofs are ideal for projects where mechanical attachments can be challenging or impossible. This is often the case in refurbishment projects. A major draw of adhered roofs is their aesthetic appeal, especially if the roof is visible. Felt underlay can be used to overcome roof surface irregularities and achieve a homogenous finish. This is ideal for residential developments or for projects where the roof is visible or partially visible. The choice of the single ply membrane can reflect the design choice for the project.
On a fully adhered single ply roof, the waterproofing membrane is secured across the entire roof surface, which means the roof can better withstand strong movements such as wind uplift. Modern adhesives are durable and resilient to natural elements and can be complemented with seam tape to ensure high strength and watertight seams.
Heat is not a requirement for the installation of adhered roofs, meeting the objectives of the Safe2Torch guidance. The application of the adhesive can be by roller, spray or brush.
