Hot applied roofing solutions can be divided into two main groups: hot melt and mastic asphalt. Hot melt roofing systems are self-healing membranes created when a hot liquid is applied to the prepared structural surface. Mastic asphalt comes in a variety of formulations that use advanced polymer technology and is applied by traditional methods in two coats.
Heat is required for other types of roofing applications. These include pour and roll, torch on and hot air welded roofing systems.
Mastic asphalt is one of the oldest construction and waterproofing membrane solutions made popular because of its durability and reliable performance. Modern variations are formulated to extend the life of the mastic asphalt and make it applicable to the demands of modern construction and environmental protection. IKO PLC achieved the CarbonZero standard in 2007.
Hot melt roofing systems are manufactured from a combination of refined bitumen, synthetic rubbers, fillers and other additives. This gives the finished monolithic membrane long lasting waterproofing integrity ideal for most new build flat roof applications with suitable protection layer. This includes those designed and constructed to achieve zero falls.
The waterproofing layer is usually unaffected by standing water, dilute acids and fertiliser, and some formulas allow for root control which lends itself to specification for inverted and green roofs. The use of a combination of materials means some hot melt roof systems contain a high proportion of recycled content.
Modern mastic asphalts are specially formulated to include synthetic bitumen, and some include advanced polymer technology to offer improved durability, temperature stability and fatigue resistance and to make the installation easier. The solution is suitable for flat roofs with pitches up to 10°, and with modifications to the application, can be used for slopes over 30° and curved surfaces. Mastic asphalt can be used on most roof decks, whether concrete, timber or profile metal. The typical specification is for insulated warm roofs, un-insulated cold roofs and inverted roofs. Application for both extensive and intensive green roofs is common as the waterproof membrane can last for the design life of the roofing system.
IKO products are manufactured in the UK from responsibly, and where possible, locally sourced materials in order to reduce our carbon footprint and help with the sustainability of your project. The majority of our roofing systems are also BBA certified.
