The qualities of the two polymers used in torch on roofing solutions differ. APP is a flexible solution that responds well to heating and cooling and has good UV radiation and sun resistance. SBS is an elastic solution that can absorb the structural movements, expansions, and contractions of the underlying components. As the UV radiation resistance is not as high as APP, the SBS layer tends to be specified with an additional finish of gravel or slate.
Torch on roof systems are suitable for metal and concrete roof decks, but they cannot be specified with timber deck substrates due to potential fire risks. The system can be specified for new projects; however, it lends itself well to refurbishment as the existing roof doesn’t always require removing.
Single layer torch on systems are available, but the two most commonly specified types are two and three layer. Both systems use base and cap sheets. The three layer system uses a granule cap sheet as the finishing layer to further extend the life of the roof and enhance fire resistance and improve energy efficiency.
Although torch on application follows the principles of pour and roll, the bitumen adhesive is applied to the roofing felt during manufacture and the felt is then available as a roll. This is then heated up on site with an open flame propane torch to release the modified bitumen onto the roof surface for the felt to be rolled into. It is important to follow the Safe2Torch guidance from National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) to ensure safe installation.
