Home/Floor components – Base coat

Floor components – Base coat

Base coats, when used as a flooring component, are layers that form part of a cold applied liquid polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) flooring system. They are fully bonded to the primed substrate and form a waterproof seal, giving the flooring system strength, stability and penetration resistance.

Base coats are specified with PMMA flooring systems for internal floors, especially galleries and stairs. Externally they are frequently used for balconies and terraces and can also be specified for car parks, ramps and HGV service decks. Due to the high bonding strength, they are ideal for application in refurbishment projects and their fast curing helps projects with sensitive scheduling.

Two-component base coats are applied in two layers. Whilst the first layer is still wet, a reinforcement polyester fleece is rolled out and pressed into it. This is followed by a second layer of the base coat. The base coat bonds fully with a variety of primed substrates and with levelling compounds. The solution can bridge gaps without cracking, is temperature stable, and is also ideal for use in areas that require precision work.

Their installation is relatively easy and rapid. Along with fast curing times, this allows for layers to be installed without delay, and the surface is trafficable soon after the installation.

What are the benefits of a base coat for a flooring system?
