There are three frequently used solutions used for flooring, hot applied mastic asphalt, cold applied liquid, and screed. Each solution has a specific application, depending on the preferred installation method and the intended use of the building. Internal flooring is used in most environments from light domestic applications such as shops, offices, and schools to heavy duty industrial and hospital flooring. Some flooring solutions, like mastic asphalts and cold applied poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) can be also used for exposed and semi-exposed parking decks and elevated ramps, balconies, walkways, terraces and paving can be used for specialist external applications such as bridge or tank decks.
Mastic asphalt flooring can be utilised in wide variety of projects, from light domestic use to heavy industrial applications. They can be the final finish or used as an underlay for tiles, carpeting or other finishing layers. Mastic asphalt floors provide a hard-wearing, durable surface and also act as a damp-proof membrane. These are hot applications and once fully cooled, they can take the foot traffic immediately which is a great advantage for busy sites with foot traffic from other trades or refurbishment projects where the building is in use, such as hospitals and schools.
Similar to roofing applications, two component polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) solutions can be cold applied to concrete and cement-based substrates. The result is a durable protective and wearing layer, suitable for external application. The installation is fast and relatively easy and can be done in poor weather conditions. The fast curing times are ideal for projects that need to be released quickly.
In modern construction, traditional cement screeds are often replaced with specially formulated mastic asphalt to create a heavy duty, durable surface and is designed to provide drainage falls and a suitable base. The installation is rapid and without the need for compaction. Although the installation requires heat, the fast curing times mean the surface can be trafficked or overlaid as soon as the material cools.
IKO products are manufactured in the UK from responsibly, and where possible, locally sourced materials in order to reduce our carbon footprint and help with the sustainability of your project.

The project required replacing the 200m2 floor with a hard wearing surface – a ground asphalt surface was the decision taken for the project; a challenging material to bring into an interior environment.
