2021

Q1 WINNER – SPV

Congratulations to SPV Group, winners of the IKO Contractor Recognition Award! The quality of the Hilda Besse Building project, including the detailing of the rooflights and the use of our IKO Permaphalt Mastic Asphalt, was excellent. In addition, their approach to corporate responsibility, training, accreditation and support for the NHS made for a compelling submission. Big shout out to Luke Maginnis for the co-ordination of the project!

Project Name: Hilda Besse Building

Project Size: 800m²

Project Materials: IKO Permaphalt Mastic Asphalt System

Project Description: The main challenge to the project was that all 88 roof lights had to be individually built up from scratch. A timber frame was created around each one to incorporate a torch on vapour barrier followed by a 110mm insulation. Every part of the timber frames needed to be prepared with a sheathing felt followed by expanding metal lath

The key to the expert delivery of this project was the preparation and detail work. 120mm of insulation was installed to each and every roof light followed by the 3 layer of asphalt roofing.  The asphalt installed to the vertical walls was challenging but expertly installed as per industry guidelines .

Half the roof was protected by an over roof but the other half wasn’t so this was a challenge in regards to delivery and meant the site team needed to move from one area to the other to suit the weather conditions.

Rio Asphalt Ltd_Winner

Q1 WINNER – RIO ASPHALT

Congratulations to our Q1 winner of the IKO Contractor Recognition Award Rio Group!

Rio Asphalt Project

Project Name: Private Housing in Solihull

Project Size: 90m²

Project Materials: IKO Permaphalt Mastic Asphalt System

Project Description: This private house project enlisted the use of a mastic asphalt roof over a newly built extension.   Mastic Asphalt was a planning recommendation of the local Planning Authority and was also favoured by the Home Owner who was looking for a low carbon environmental solution. Other considerations to be taken into account were that the house is located within a conservation area which meant that materials and finish were crucial to the success of the project.

The roof was designed with falls which fell to 5 external lead shoot outlets. To further assist the movement of water additional Asphalt diamonds were laid to increase natural drainage and run off.  The roof also consists of two large roof lights to increase natural lighting levels within the extension.  The asphalt was laid in two coats of 10mm (20mm) asphalt waterproofing which was sand rubbed.  The upstands consisting of three coats of Asphalt on Expanded Metal Lath and an asphalt plug to the perimeter.

GMG Contractors - Highly Commended

Q1 – HIGHLY COMMENDED – GMG

Thanks to GMG’s ongoing commitment in innovation, supporting the workforce by training and apprenticeship/career opportunities, they have been presented the Highly Commended Award in Q1. Their project submission was also a great indication of their excellent workmanship through the training programmes they provide.

Project Name: Sir John Mann Centre

Project Size: 530m²

Project Materials: IKO BUR Membranes

Project Description: This project firstly came to our attention as a roofing job only but West Lothian Council decided to include the adjoining church also, they then decided to put out a complete package together including covering the existing walls with an insulated render system also.

Unfortunately for us at IKO as we had done all the groundwork doing all the core cuts etc and putting a spec together for the council they had to put it out on a public contracts portal due to the large amount of money it would take to complete this work in its entirety.

As GMG Contractors are a multi trades very IKO Pro company with a vast amount of experience in both all the IKO systems and installing insulated wall render it made perfect sense to team up and go for this job which we successfully did.

GMG submitted their tender and the job was then duly awarded. Please note that this project was also awarded on a points score system therefore both the manufacturers roofing system and the contractors had to achieve a very high criteria to be awarded with this contract also.
