Structural waterproofing – Accessories
Structural waterproofing accessories are used to improve the performance of the structural waterproofing system, increase its service life and speed up installation. The choice of accessories should reflect the structural waterproofing solution and the project specifics to ensure complete protection of the structure from water ingress and damp transfer from the ground.
The performance of damp proofing can be improved with the use of preformed cloaks and cavity closures that help to joint difficult and complex cavity tray junctions and endings. Cloaks significantly reduce the risk of any future leaks in the cavity tray causes by inadequate detailing and they can help limit on-site detailing to relatively simple jointing. Cloaks often come in standard units but can be manufactured as project specific where required.
Gap fillers, fixing strips and fixing pins and jointing tapes are used with damp proof courses (DPC) and jointing and flashing tapes are often used for finishing of damp proof membranes (DPMs) installations. Flexible top hats are used to protect service penetrations and are mostly specified with gas membranes. These accessories can ensure continuity of the protection at junctions, laps, perimeter walls and risk areas and some may require use with primers.
Primers may be used to seal and prepare surfaces and to increase the adhesion of tanking membranes and detailing accessories. Primers can improve the adhesion of both self-adhesive and torch applied bituminous membranes and accessories.
To extend the service life of tanking solutions, tough and durable protection boards may be used. These are puncture resistant and protect the membranes from abrasion or any mechanical damage during backfilling or subsequent structural settlement. Where tanking solutions are used to protect retaining walls, drainage composite may be used to create an effective drainage void.
