The use of damp proof courses (DPCs) for masonry walls is required by Building Regulations to support the prevention of the upward movement of water by capillary action (rising damp), water transfer within a structure and the downward movement of moisture. Whilst a DPC can be used to prevent the transfer of water from door sills and window jambs, cavity trays are used to prevent water transfers over items such as lintels and brick support systems that bridge a cavity.
A variety of materials can be used for the manufacture of DPCs for structural waterproofing, each with specific benefits. Polymeric DPCs have low permeability to hazardous gasses such as radon, carbon dioxide and methane and can be designed to form a ground gas protection system. Another DPC with enhanced resistance to the passage of ground gasses is an aluminium core membrane. These membranes combine an aluminium core with a rubber modified bitumen coating for strong mortar adhesion.
Sand surfaced bituminous DPCs can be used to prevent water movement upwards in higher structures and in applications where an excellent mortar bond is required. Bitumen polymer DPCs are used in areas with minimal loading requirements, such as parapet walls, but these DPCs perform well under both high and low compressive loads. Insulated DPCs are can also be deployed to minimise the risk of thermal bridging across building fabric.
Most DCPs are specified with compatible insulation and accessories such as cloak units or project specific units to form a holistic DPC system that provides high performance damp proofing even of the most complex details.
Most IKO products are manufactured in the UK from responsibly, and where possible, locally sourced materials in order to reduce our carbon footprint and help with the sustainability of your project.
