Damp Proof Membrane

Damp proof membrane for structural waterproofing

Damp proof membranes (DPMs) are required for use either above or below solid concrete floor slabs that are in contact with the ground. Their purpose is to prevent moisture transmission from the soil through the substrate, in accordance with Building Regulations. DPMs can also be used to form ground gas protection systems shielding buildings against radon, carbon dioxide and methane.

Polyethene DPMs can also be used where a suspended floor of in-situ or precast concrete is next to the ground and where the ground below the floor has been excavated below the lowest level of the surrounding ground. For best performance in both instances, the DPM should be continuous with the DPC in the walls. These types of membranes are chemically inert and remain unaffected by acids and alkalis that may be present in the subsoils.

Specifically designed hazardous ground gas membranes can be used as a part of appropriately designed ground gas protection systems when building on contaminated land. These membranes must be installed in accordance with the relevant code of practice and the design of the system must follow the risk assessment methods of CIRIA C665 and the suitability of the membrane must be assessed under the current Building Regulations. These membranes can also act as damp proof membranes.

For best performance, DPMs should be used with compatible accessories and insulation to form a holistic DPM system that is easy to install.

What are the benefits of a damp proof membrane for structural waterproofing?

  • Protection from moisture from the ground
  • Shield from radon, methane, and carbon dioxide from the ground
  • Extends the design life of the masonry and the flooring
  • Prevents interstitial condensation that can affect thermal performance
