Tanking solutions for structural waterproofing

Tanking solutions for structural waterproofing are membrane barriers applied to external walls and/or the floor slabs of a structure to prevent the entry of water and harmful substances from the surrounding area. These can be applied at ground level, below ground level (hydrostatic pressure) and on sloping sites.

Barrier membranes, known as tanking solutions, fall under Type A of structural waterproofing solutions as recognised by BS 8102:2009. Type A tanking solutions include brush applied liquids, self-adhesive membranes, heat bonded membranes and gas resistant solutions.

Tanking solutions are often installed with primers, drainage composites, protection boards and other accessories that protect the waterproofing and extend its life. Tanking solutions can be installed with damp protection membranes and courses. Choosing compatible components will help ensure maximum performance of the system and simplify the installation.

Tanking solutions - Cold applied liquids

These brush applied waterproofing liquids are a blend of bitumen emulsion and synthetic rubber latex and can be specified with specific DMPs. They form a seamless waterproofing membrane that is relatively simple to apply using a brush and has a low odour.

Tanking solutions - Self-adhesive membranes

These are tough polyester carriers with a self-adhesive bitumen sheet that are cold applied. The resulting tanking is of consistent thickness.

Tanking solutions – Heat bonded membranes

Heat bonded bitumen membranes are tough polyester carriers ideal for cold weather application. The welded laps provide optimum lap security. Some bitumen membranes can be used with concrete blinding. Non-woven polyester membranes can also protect against backfill.

Tanking solutions – Gas resistant membranes

These are often foil lined, self-adhered bitumen sheets that can be cold applied. They resist the passage of radon and methane. When considering gas resistant membranes, assessments under BS8485:2015, NHBC and CIRIA C665 must be followed.

What are the benefits of tanking solutions for structural waterproofing?

  • Barrier to prevent water ingress into structures often below ground
  • Helps prevent structural issues
  • Reduces the level of humidity in the building
  • Prevents cracking of cement floor
  • Protects the structure from harmful natural occurring gasses such as radon and methane
