The quality of IKO’s range of products and systems is underpinned by a wealth of independent accreditations.
During 2016 IKO supplemented the BES 6001 certification that was already held at Appley Bridge and Grangemill with certification at Clay Cross.
In addition, all three IKO PLC sites in the UK continue to achieve ISO14001 and ISO9001. Maintaining these certifications is an important step in establishing management systems and reducing environmental impact, helping IKO to continually improve.
ISO 14001 is the international standard that specifies a process for controlling and improving an organisation’s environmental performance. It sets out a framework of essential elements for putting in place an effective Environmental Management System (EMS).
ISO 9001 is a framework for effectively managing a business and meeting its customers’ requirements. It is the world’s most established quality framework and sets the standard not only for quality management systems, but management systems in general.
BES 6001 is the Framework Standard for Responsible Sourcing developed by BRE Global. The scheme provides manufacturers with a means by which their products can be independently assessed and certified as being responsibly sourced. The scheme is recognised by the BREEAM family of certification schemes and by the Code for Sustainable Homes.
This standard is developed to follow other generic management system approaches such as ISO 14001 and 9001 within the Health and Safety Management arena. It takes into account other International Standards in this area such as OHSAS 18001, the International Labour Organization’s ILO-OSH Guidelines, various national standards and the ILO’s international labour standards and conventions.

BRE Global is responsible for the internationally renowned BREEAM family of schemes for assessing the environmental performance of buildings.
Through CO2balance, IKO provides a mastic asphalt solution with no discernible carbon footprint. As part of this scheme, the CO2 that is generated as a result of manufacturing, delivering and installing mastic asphalt is offset through a system of self-impose levies.
The money raised is then used to help support a range of global environmental initiatives, such as providing energy efficient cooking stoves to Kenyan communities.

BBA certification (British Board of Agrément) is recognised throughout the construction industry as a symbol of excellence and reassurance which is why IKO is committed to manufacturing and supplying products and systems that meet certification criteria of the highest quality.
To date IKO has 53 BBA approved products and systems, some of which span the 53 year history of the BBA itself.

IKO PLC has been awarded an International Safety Award for Manufacturing by the British Safety Council. The award reflects IKO’s commitment to protecting all its employees from the risk of injury and ill health at work. Now in their 60th year, the International Safety Awards recognise and celebrate organisations from around the world which have demonstrated commitment to preventing work-related injuries and ill-health.
Over the past few years IKO have invested significantly in the Health and Safety of employees and have seen positive reductions in lost time and first aid injury cases. Implementation of ‘5S’ systems at all sites to improve efficiency and housekeeping standards is helping to reduce the potential for injuries;
- Slips / trips / fall injuries reduced by 50%
- Lost time injuries reduced by 37% with lost days reducing by 49%
- Increased near miss reporting by over 200%, highlighting problems and fixing them before they become accidents
- Group wide audit scheme has been implemented to highlight issues and action plans put in place
- Invested in safety training to IOSH approved standards at management and operational levels

IKO works closely with the NHBC – the UK’s leading independent standard-setting body and provider of warranty and insurance for new homes. Their purpose is to work with the house-building industry to raise standards.
